Think again, if you say you don’t need a website

Whether you are a web startup, brick and mortar traditional business, or unemployed looking for a job–a website is useful.

People often make the mistake thinking that Facebook can replace a website, so instead of creating a website, they create a Facebook page. However, even with a Facebook page there are a lot of limitations that you can encounter. For example, not everyone is on Facebook; there really is no search engine optimization to reach out to your demographic. In addition, a very important consideration is that Facebook is a middleman, and as a user you are on their platform and therefore their playing terms. Facebook is notorious for their constant changes in their privacy policy so you do not have control over that as you would on your own website. In addition, as business there is a potential loss of your page and all of your contents if you happen to break their terms of service.

Why you need to Create a Website

This is the information age. People go online to search for basically everything. Let’s look at the different examples I posed in the beginning of this blog.

Web Startup — Obviously if you are a web startup you require a website, because that is where all your business is coming from. So, I’m not going to go into specifics as to why you need a website. It should be pretty self-explanatory.

The traditional brick and mortar business– These are the florists, bar owners, and mechanics. My business is on the physical plane, not in some computer, there really is no reason to be on the internet, right? WRONG! As I mentioned earlier this is the information age, no one goes outside to see the local florist or the local mechanic, they research the best florist and the best mechanic online and use the internet to base their opinion on which company to do business with. If you have a website, you will be better placed on the internet, you can connect to a wider audience, and you can showcase your products so that people will want to come to you. Do I need to say more?

The unemployed/college student – I’m not selling anything, I don’t even have a job, I have ABSOLUTELY NO need to create a website. Think Again! I am going to repeat myself, it is the information age. Employers are checking you out before you even step into the interview. Looking at Facebook and Linkedin, they give a very rigid overview of the amazing person that you are and the essential asset that these companies need. Showing is better than telling. With a website, you can showcase your personality in pictures, videos, and documents. You can upload articles and achievements so that employers can actually see your accomplishments instead of reading one line item on Linkedin.

I don’t have the money, the time, or the knowledge to build a website

It’s True! Websites are expensive and require a lot of time and technical skills…in 2001. We are now in 2012!!! Websites that used to cost thousands of dollars are worth pennies now. Even better, there are a lot of services that allow you to create a professional website without needing any technical skills for about $10 a month! That’s about 33 cents a day which is much less than your daily cup of coffee every morning.

There is no reason to stay in the Dark Age with traditional outdated means of selling and looking for jobs. We are in the Information age and websites are made for your advantage. There is no reason why you shouldn’t create a website today.
